According to the bill’s author, the idea behind it was that old people are still incapable of forsaking the Soviet mentality and balk the country’s progress. Although so far this proposition remains a proposition, let’s take a look at its implications. The idea of limiting the access to voting rights according to this or that principle isn’t all that new – in fact, if you think about it, it is implemented even in the countries that use universal suffrage – for the simple reason that citizens do not get the right to vote at birth, but only after achieving certain age. Thus, limitation of voting right according to age isn’t unheard of – if young people are considered unfit for vote before they come of age irrespectively of their mental capabilities, maybe it is alright to establish an age after which citizens should be considered unfit to vote as well? After all, the difference between the two is only that we are used to one limitation and not used to another. However, the answer is probably that there is something inherently wrong with the idea of tying the voting rights with age at all. Both these limitations are completely arbitrary. A 16-year-old with IQ over 150 is certainly more fit to vote than a 30-year old unemployed drunkard, but the state thinks otherwise. If politicians were truly concerned about further development of the country and improvement of its situation it would be much more logical to limit the access to voting rights not by age, but by intellectual capacities. For example, in order to vote one should pass an exam in elementary concepts of economics, sociology and finance. Thus voting would be limited to those who both care about taking part in the country’s political life and know their way about it. There is another popular idea, according to which voting rights should be limited to those who pay more into the country’s budget in taxes than they receive from it in the form of welfare. Thus voting can be limited to the intellectual and productive elite – the people who actually move the country forwards and not simply talk about it, like politicians tend to do. Of course, both these systems are not ideal in the very least – on the contrary, they have some very important drawbacks, not the least of which being that they are hard in implementation. But both of them are more logical than trying to limit the access to voting rights on the basis of age. However, it is very unlikely that any of these systems is ever implemented in a democratic country. Although universal suffrage is a relatively new thing (as is, for the most of the world, democracy), the western society is very sensitive about retaining it, and the idea of arbitrarily taking it away from this or that population group is very unlikely to find support even among those who isn’t going to be immediately affected by such a change. And even if we leave the feelings of the population of the country alone, one has to think about further unfortunate implications such a decision will have. Ukraine is eager to become an inherent part of Europe, and universal suffrage, without limitations, is one of demands European Union has for its members. In (an unlikely) case such law is ever to be passed, Ukraine will have even more problems with integrating into Europe than it has right now.

The decision should be between the patient and the doctor. Generals, Colonels, Majors, even enlisted soldiers, are being brainwashed into believing that they are fighting for a good cause. Yossarian knows that they have only become their own worst enemies though. Catch-22, by Joseph Heller, shines a light on the irony of war and forces the reader to ask: how much is too much? The realization of death is very clear to Yossarian and unlike the other majors and generals; he does not want to die for his country. Many readers may argue that these feelings are wrong and immoral for a soldier to feel, but Yossarian’s arguments make perfect sense. He says to Clevinger, â€Å"Open your eyes, Clevinger. It doesn’t make a damned difference who wins the war to someone who’s dead.† (123) Of course Clevinger retorts saying that Yossarian’s words are only giving comfort to the enemy, but I wonder who the enemy is. According to Yossarian, â€Å"The enemy is anybody who’s going to get you killed, no matter which side he’s on, and that includes Colonel Cathcart.† (124) By increasing the missions, he is slowly killing each one of his soldiers. Like Colonel Cathcart, other men are quick to turn their backs on each other. Dobbs pleads Yossarian to approve his plan to murder Colonel Cathcart and Milo will sell anything t o collect money for himself. The old legend says to keep your friends close and your enemies closer, but Yossarian is the only soldier who sees that this is the wrong suggestion in the time of war. While Yossarian may be the only sane one fighting, he has no way of leaving the war. He claims to be crazy several times and when Doc Daneeka says, â€Å"There’s a rule saying I have to ground anyone who’s crazy.† (45), Yossarian nearly rejoices. But there’s a catch. Catch-22, â€Å"specified that a concern for one’s own safety in the face of dangers that were real and immediate was the process of a rational mind.† (46) These overlapping rules add to the idea the war is a game. The ambiguity of war really conveys the point that all the efforts a man may put into escaping the war will never pay off. Even if a soldier was mentally ill and was a threat to those people around him, it would not be anything out of the ordinary. Once you add Catch-22, there is no point to sending him home. Yossarian commits many acts in the novel that others see as â€Å"madness†. As the reader though you understand why he does these things. Colonel Cathcart makes a list of all the happenings associated with Yossarian, including, â€Å"Ferrara, Bologna (bomb line moved on map during), Skeet range, Naked man in formation (during Avignon), Food poisoning (during Bologna), Moaning (epidemic of during Avignon briefing)† (212). A glance at this list could easily make the reader think Yossarian is crazy, but each occurrence has an explanation. For instance, the â€Å"Naked man in formation (during Avignon)† was Yossarian and the reason he was naked was because one of his flight partners bled all over his uniform while he was dying. It makes perfect sense that Yossarian would not want to wear the blood of a dead man. The blood of a man he knew and worked with. The blood of a man that could have easily been him. There are many instances where Yossarian is mild in comparis on to the acts of other men. It is insane that Dobbs would actually consider murdering Colonel Cathcart. It is insane that Colonel Cathcart continues to increase the flight mission number. And it is also insane that Milo would try to feed his soldiers cotton in order to cover up his own mistakes. All the actions that the other men commit get overshadowed by the spotlight that is shined on Yossarian. Yossarian is the soldier that stands and represents the whole. He sees the reality and continues to be sane when everyone else is being brain-washed by the war. These men do not even know what they are fighting for. They are each others enemies and only wish the worst for each other. This is why Yossarian needs to escape the war. If he doesn’t than he will be sucked into something so warped and twisted. And if he doesn’t die during a mission, he will surely be murder by the men around him who actually are crazy.

In the article entitled â€Å"Leadership† it talks about the historical background of leadership throughout history; The author points out that leadership has been traced back to the time of the ancient Greeks and even back to an Italian named Niccolo’ Machiavelli, in which he wrote a book called â€Å"The Prince†. In this book Machiavelli states that leaders during that time used acquiring power. The ideas and theories of leadership have been uncovered and introduced to us from thousands of years ago. It is important to learn from the past to make the future more promising. We use the information that was gathered from the past and add to it to make better decisions. To be a better leader one can learn from mentors that have became leaders before. In the article the author states that the theories can be â€Å"divided â€Å"in to two categories. In one of the categories the reasons are based on traits and behaviors, and the second reasons are based from particular situations. An example of the trait and behavior theory is that leaders were not born they were made, and that leaders were â€Å"chosen by God or the Gods. The article states that this theory was viewed by many and some believed that they would never become leaders. For thousands of years leadership has been researched and studied and many questions have been answered and some have not. It has been said that leaders have the ability to imagine new ways to achieve goals and relay them to others (2003). Another issue t hat has been important in leadership is diversity. Most people’s view of a leader throughout history has been that leaders are male rather than female. Why is that? Investigators have found that female leaders tend to involve followers more in the decision making process. Statistics show that male leaders are often chosen over female. Leadership is also viewed differently from one culture to another (2003). Since there are many theories, one could argue that women are better leaders in the workplace. You make the decision. In reality most leaders are male, generally speaking. But, there are some important statistics when it comes to men and women in the workplace as leaders. Here are some statistics to take into consideration: Women are slightly more likely than men to say they are very confident in their ability to keep pace (61% vs. 57%); only 56% of women were very interested in continuing with their careers, vs. 69% of the men; fewer than half of the online professional’s surveyed feel that women receive equal pay for equal work in the industry: 55% of men, vs. 29% of women (Woods 2001). The article entitled Leadership as a Boss in the Workplace gives ideas and tips that may come in to use in the workplace. The author Charles Williams makes good points throughout this article. For example, you have to love what you do in order to teach and guide others and you also must believe in your people and your company to be successful (Williams 2007). I believe that this is true in all aspects of leadership. Unless, you know what you are doing, it is hard to give people something they can take with them and apply later. He states that â€Å"if you have those who are not working as a team then it hurts everyone including the company. † It is important to apply leadership in the workplace and with it you can all join together to get the job done together as a team. When you are working with a group it is all about teamwork (pg 1). John C. Maxwell, the author of the book titled The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership he defines leadership as the ability to obtain followers. It is the ability to influence others to follow you because without followers who are you leading? A common misunderstanding is leading and managing is one in the same. The difference between leading and managing is that managing is focused on maintaining processes and leading is influencing people into a new direction (Maxwell 2002). Having a title does not have value when it comes to being a leader. Leadership is all about respect and discipline. All that a title can do is bide time. A true leader defines oneself opposed to the title defining them. Maxwell’s twenty one laws that he touches on in this book are definitely encouraging as a reader. One of my favorite laws is the law of influence where he talks about how you cannot be a good leader if you are not a good influence. Influence is all about having followers, which goes back to the theory that one cannot be a good leader without followers (2002). Another good one is the law of solid ground. This law is about trust and if trust is broken then you will not be a successful leader. So, if you are not trustworthy then nobody will follow you. Leadership in the workplace can be defined in many different ways, but the most important term in my opinion about a leader is respect. Throughout history, the most memorable leaders are the ones that were well respected or fell from grace. Of course, most leaders would not want to be remembered from falling from grace, but this has occurred and happens in our lives today. The point is that leaders are looked up to and define a standard set forth by companies, organizations, laws and countries. Without leaders, we would be all followers and only destruction would come of it. Clearly, we can imagine in our lives what it would be like if we did not have someone to answer to. Leaders are needed to delegate and motivate responsibility and are considered well respected among their peers. A leader that is not respected is not a very good leader. Nobody will respect an untrustworthy person. Therefore, a leader who is untrustworthy will not have any followers. Just as Maxwell states, what is a leader without any followers. Dawn, the youngest of three siblings, is the only survivor after their car has crashed through the ice of Lake Wabamum. In the truck with Dawn is her Dad and youngest sibling, Janie. The story begins in present tense, with the point of no return. â€Å"We’re a long way out on the lake when the ice breaks†. Though it starts off like this, it could be argued that this is no in medias res. There is no tension, nor excitement. Just that statement – the ice breaks – and a beautiful, picturesque description of their surroundings. It’s rather unusual for present tense to be this â€Å"mellow†. Present tense is effective in building excitement and leading up to a climax. Blodgett used it to create the the opposite; she’s using present tense to emphasize how under whelmed and observant Dawn remains during her dad’s struggle for their lives. The past tense is used in the story to tell the tale of the morning before Dawn, Janie and their dad drove onto the lake. Until the last paragraph, the entire story takes place before noon in one day, which is not unusual for a short story. In the past tense, the relationships within the family are presented. And they are tense. This is hinted, by the repeated mention of the divorce of their neighbors, the Pichowskys. Marla, the oldest sibling says to Dawn, on page three, line 56: â€Å"I know something you don’t know†, and line 62: â€Å" Remember Mr. and Mra. Pichowsky down the street?† and then she leaves. Line 69, Dawn is thinking: â€Å"Mr. and Mrs. Pichowsky got a divorce last year and moved.† Dawn herself concludes, line 73: â€Å" Marla must mean that Mom and Dad were going to be like Mr. and Mrs. Pichowsky†.
